PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive, high strength rail having improved wear resistance by controlling the form, size and density of carbides in prescribed ranges in a structure where the carbon content in steel is also controlled to a prescribed value or above, and the spheroidal carbides are finely dispersed and by enhancing surface damage resistance required for a high-load railroad. SOLUTION: In the wear resistant rail containing speroidal carbides, 0.85-2.00 mass% C is contained and at least a part of a railhead has a structure where spheroidal carbides having a major axis to minor axis ratio of <=2 are dispersed. Further, in an arbitrary section of the above structure, the total area of spheroidal carbides having 50-800 nm average value of major axis and minor axis comprises 20-80% of the area of the above structure in the above arbitrary section.
