PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the load on a building side when installing an elevator with a hoisting machine installed in a lower hoistway by a non-scaffolding method. SOLUTION: When a car and a counterweight 35 thereof are engaged with a guide rail with upper and lower ends thereof locked to the hoistway, and an intermediate portion of the guide rail 11 is locked to a hoistway wall 2 by elevating/lowering the car as a working floor, a part of a weight piece 35a is removed from the counterweight 35 to reduce the weight of the counterweight, and a temporary counterweight 35 for the installation work is formed. A deflector sheave 61 for pushing a main rope 41 in the horizontal direction at a riser part from the hoisting machine 5 is provided, the angleαof the rope wound around a sheave 6 by the deflector sheave 61 is increased to prevent the slip generated by the increase in the differential tension in the sheave as the weight of the counterweight 35 is reduced.
