PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of joining steel columns together whereby the cost of connecting upper and lower steel columns together for the erection of the steel columns can be reduced. SOLUTION: Joint plates 2a to 2d projecting inwards in a direction perpendicular to the interior wall surface of the upper steel column 1 are mounted at the center of the interior wall surface of the lower connecting end portion of the upper steel column 1. Angles 4a to 4d for engagement with the joint plates 2a to 2d are stood on the upper end plate 3a of the lower steel column 3, and inclined parts 5a to 5d for use as guides are provided at the side ends of the angles on one side. The upper steel column 1 is caused to drop into the lower steel column 3 and the side ends of the angles 4a to 4d on the other side are assembled to the side faces of the joint plates 2a to 2d in such a way as to be engaged therewith by approaching them from a perpendicular direction. Also, the peripheral edge of the lower connecting end portion of the upper steel column 1 is field-welded to the upper end plate 3a of the lower steel column 3 to completely fix the columns together.
