Control of arthropods using 3-(4-methylpentanoyl)-3,4-dihydro-6-methyl-1,2-pyran-2,4-dione or tautomer thereof

An . a. -pyrone compound of formula: and tautomers thereof are active in controlling arthropods. Compositions of such compounds as an active ingredient may be formulated with a carrier. Harmful arthropods can be controlled by applying an effective amount of the pyrone compound to an arthropod or to a place inhabited by an arthropod. Such arthropods include the house fly, mosquito, cockroach, flea, termite, house dust mite, pill bug, ant, aphid, whitefly, millipede, centipede or a lepidopterous insect.
