PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance projection system capable of realizing the miniaturization and the wide angle of a projection optical system and obtaining a high-contrast projected image. SOLUTION: This projection system is constituted so that light from a light source 5 is guided to a TIR prism PR by an illumination optical system IL, and the light totally reflected by the prism PR is optically modulated by a DMD 2 and projected to a surface to be projected by the projection optical system PL, and satisfies the following conditional expression. 100<=Xa<=250, wherein Xa (mm) is the distance from the DMD 2 to the pupil on the DMD 2 side of the illumination optical system IL.
