PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic timepiece which stops handling of a hand during sleeping by detecting brightness or darkness but does not wastefully correct a time only when it temporarily becomes bright. SOLUTION: The electronic timepiece comprises a second hand drive moor 121 for driving a second hand, a control circuit 14 and a brightness, and darkness detecting means 22 for detecting brightness or darkness of a circumference. The circuit 14 stops the motor 121 when the means 22 detects a dark state, restarts the drive of the second hand when the means 22 detects a bright state, and corrects a display time of the hand when the bright state is continuously detected for a predetermined time.
