PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerator in which maximum safety measures are taken against a defrosting heater which constitutes an ignition source in the refrigerator using a hydrocarbon refrigerant, very inflammable, because a fluorocarbon refrigerant used in the conventional refrigerator, etc., is easily to handle due to the stable physical properties, however, even an HFC refrigerant, which is undestructive to the ozone layer, has GWP(global warming potential) of 1,300, considerably higher when compared with the hydrocarbon refrigerant in the order of 3, and is feared to have adverse effect on the global warming. SOLUTION: The refrigerator has a refrigerating cycle in which a refrigerant discharged from a compressor 7 passes through a condenser 9, a dryer, a throttle valve 11, and an evaporator 13, and then a suction tube 20, to return to the compressor 7. Further, in the refrigerator, an inflammable refrigerant such as a hydrocarbon refrigerant is employed, and a specific relationship is established between the surface area of a defrosting heater for removing frost in the evaporator 13 and a heater input.
