PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device and a projection type display device so formed that a display defect caused by disclination is not generated for a projection type high definition liquid crystal panel and high contrast display is made possible. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 50 is interposed between one substrate 10 and the other substrate 20 and pixel electrodes 9a disposed in a matrix-shape and TFTs 30 for respectively driving the plural pixel electrodes are provided on the one substrate 10. And when the thickness of a liquid crystal between the substrates and an alignment angle (pre-tilt angle) of the liquid crystal on the surface of the substrate are defined as d and θp, respectively, the relation of 20 deg.<=θp<=30 deg. and 1<=d/L is satisfied.
