摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the utilization efficiency of light in a image display device like a liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: A polarizer is formed by laminating a light scattering type polarizing element that has a polarized light selection layer selectively transmitting a specified polarized light and selectively reflecting or scattering other polarized lights, and a light absorbing type polarizing element that has a polarized light selection layer selectively transmitting a specified polarized light and selectively absorbing other polarized lights. The polarized light transmission axis of the light scattering type polarizing element and the polarized light transmission axis of the light absorbing type polarizing element are disposed to be practically parallel to each other. The polarized light selection layer of the light scattering type polarizing element is composed of an optical isotropic continuous phase and an optical anisotropic discontinuous phase.
