PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material capable of forming a coating layer mainly on the face of building material such as wall or floor by a metallic trowel or a mortal sprayer, and absorbing moisture, bad smell, chemical substances or the like in air, and needing no protection film, and to provide a method for applying it. SOLUTION: The coating material is produced by adding additives consisting of inorganic silicate glass as a swelling agent and methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose as a binder to bamboo charcoal powder or wood charcoal powder, mixing them after further adding bamboo vinegar or wood vinegar, and adjusting the viscosity with water so that the coating material becomes suitable for trowel painting or spraying. A liquid prepared by mixing bamboo vinegar or wood vinegar, and a small amount of a binder with water is primarily applied on a coating face of a material to be coated, and it is allowed to impregnate the material and dried. On the material, the above produced coating material is applied to a necessary thickness and dried.
