PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a structure and improve the operation accuracy of a spreader by changing a driving mechanism of the spreader, attached to a sewing machine to an electric type from a mechanic power transmission mechanism. SOLUTION: In an upper fancy stitch device, a frame 1 having a stepping motor 3 and a support shaft 4 arranged in parallel is provided in the back side of a pressing member 2. A lever 5 having the spreader 6 attached to its front end and a sector gear 7 disposed at its rear end is fitted to the support shaft 4 so as to freely swing. The sector gear 7 is driven by a gear 8 attached to the output shaft 9 of the stepping motor 3. The operation of the stepping motor 3 is synchronized with the upward and downward operation of a needle 17 so that the spreader 6 at the front end of the lever 5 reciprocates along the upper surface of the pressing member 2.
