PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save a work in which, an operator manually sets the mark of an upper and front side reference of a tatami mat so as to correspond to a front ruler when the flat piercing work of the upper and front side or the lower and front side of the mat is carried out by a tatami mat sewing machine. SOLUTION: The tatami mat is merely mounted on a sewing base 2 so that the upper front side or the lower front side of the mat 16 is located in the side of a sewing machine 4 so that the sewing machine 4 stores the positions 17A and 17B of the reference marks near hand and fingers in the upper and front side or the lower and front side. When the flat piercing and sewing work of the upper front or the lower front of the mat is started, a position control is carried out so that a front cutting edge 8 moves forward on a straight line formed by connecting the reference marks near hand and fingers together.
