PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for purification of exhaust gas and a method for purification of exhaust gas by using the catalyst by which NOx in the exhaust gas of an diesel engine in a lean atmosphere having a small content of hydrocarbons as the reducing gas and low temperature of the exhaust gas. SOLUTION: The catalyst for purification of exhaust gas contains a catalyst component containing a refractory inorganic oxide which carries platinum metals, an adsorbent for nitrogen oxides and an adsorbent for hydrocarbons, and a catalyst component for purification of nitrogen oxides. The catalyst is used in the method for purification of exhaust gas.
