A fluorescent sensor (10) for detecting the presence and amount of an analyt e. The fluorescent sensor (10) has a photodetector (12), a high pass filter (14) lo cated adjacent the photodetector (12), and a glass layer (80) located adjacent the high pas s filter (14). An indicator layer (18) is located adjacent the glass layer (80) and a light emitting diode (20) is embedded in the indicator layer. The indicator layer has indicator m olecules that provide a fluorescent emission as a result of light from the light emitting diode (20). The indicator layer (18) also allows an analyte to diffuse into it and the prese nce of the analyte reduces the amount of light emitted from the indicator molecules that passes through the glass layer (80) and the high pass filter (14) and is incident upon the phot odetector (12). Since the amount of current from the photodetector (12) depends upon the inc ident light, this is used to detect the presence and amount of analyte. In one embodiment a waveguide is also present. |
