PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a bacterium capable of decomposing biphenol A and a stilbene skeleton-containing aromatic compound. SOLUTION: A separation source such as soil, activated sludge, etc., is cultured in a medium comprising biphenol A as a single carbon source and Sphingomonas sp. AO-1 strain (FERM P-17,794) being a new bacterium belonging to the genus Sphingomonas is isolated from the bacteria proliferated from the medium. The bacterium can efficiently decompose biphenol A and a stilbene skeleton-containing aromatic compound and be used for cleaning an environment.
