PURPOSE: A method for regenerating a catalyst, which suitable for use in the fabrication of trimellitic acid by liquid oxidation of pseudocumene(1,2,4-trimethyl benzene) in acetic acid solution, by ion exchange of a resultant liquid acquired by air oxidation of pseudocumene in the presence of catalysts such as cobalt, manganese and bromine in acetic acid solution. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of (a) oxidizing pseudocumene or 1.2.4-trimethyl benzene in an acetic acid solution in the presence of cobalt, manganese and bromine catalysts, thereby acquiring a slurry type oxidizing solution, (b) adding water to the slurry type oxidizing solution by 0-11 times volume of the slurry type oxidizing solution, (c) heating the diluted oxidizing solution at 25-140°C to acquire liquid type oxidizing solution, (d) treating the liquid type oxidizing solution using cation exchange resin and anion exchange resin to absorb cobalt, manganese and bromine catalyst dissolved in the oxidizing solution, and (e) regenerating the cation exchange resin and the anion exchange resin, thereby separating the cobalt, manganese and bromine catalysts.
