PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a highly efficient feed interval and reduce the number of unrecognizable paper leaves and thus upgrade the processing performance of the number of the paper leaves to the maximal level. SOLUTION: The number of empty buffer registers in a buffer control part 6 is monitored and at the same time, the number of paper leaves between a separation part 1 and a reading part 2 is monitored. In addition, a paper leaf separation process is dynamically controlled by a paper leaf separation control part 8 provided for controlling an interval between the paper leaves in such a manner that in separating the paper leaves by the separation part 1, the paper leaf feed interval is widened by the part 8 and the recognition process is performed in time by reducing the number of the paper leaves per unit time when the process to read/recognize division information is not carried out in a timely manner and the paper leaves are again fed when the recognition process is normalized. Image data stored in the buffer register is recognized by a recognition part 7 and when a division destination is decided, it is posted to a gate control part 9 and a division gate 3 is controlled.
