A method and apparatus for maintaining bait on a fishing line includes a skewer body having a sleeve that overlies and is slidable movable axially along the body. The skewer body is extended through the bait with the mouth of the bait positioned toward the first end of the body. The sleeve is slid axially along the body into the mouth of the bait until a bait engaging stop engages the bait. A first end of the body is secured to a fishing line. A second end of the body is secured to a hook. The sleeve extending into the bait reduces the risk that the bait will be cut in half. The bait engaging stop reduces the risk of the fish migrating up the fishing line.
