PURPOSE: A method for preparing a catalyst for ethylene polymerization or ethylene/α-olefin copolymerization is provided, to obtain a catalyst which allows a polymer with the narrow distribution of particle size and the increased bulk density to be produced. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of reacting an organic magnesium compound with a composition of MgPh2.nMgCl2.mR2O (wherein n = 0.37-0.7, m>=2, R2O is ether and Ph is phenyl group) and 2-chloro-2-methylpropanol at a temperature of -20 to 80 deg.C to obtain a carrier; and treating the carrier with a titanium compound or a vanadium compound. Preferably the molar ratio of 2-chloro-2-methylpropanol is 0.5 or more based on the organic magnesium compound, and 2-chloro-2-methylpropanol is used together with carbon tetrachloride. The content of 2-chloro-2-methylpropanol is 5 wt% or more in a mixture of 2-chloro-2-methylpropanol and carbon tetrachloride.
