PURPOSE: A terminal connection apparatus and method in an exchange is provided to automatically recognize digital terminals of different types, which use different kinds of power, impedance and protocol, and to set up an initial value suitably according to each terminal. CONSTITUTION: A terminal connection apparatus in an exchange is comprised of terminal connection parts(110), a terminal connection control part(120), a local control part(130), a local control bus interface part(140), a buffer(150), and a main control part(160). Each terminal connection part(110) consists of a hardware interface part(111) and a data interface part(119). The hardware interface part(111) includes an impedance matching part(113), a balance and power supply part(115), and a line protection part(117). The data interface part(119) synchronizes an AMI(Alternative Mark Inversion) line code wave supplied through the hardware interface part(111) with a system synchronous clock, processes it into 144bps data, and transmits the processed data to the terminal connection control part(120). The terminal connection control part(120) changes the serial data supplied from the terminal connection parts(110) into parallel data and provides the changed data to the local control part(130). The local control part(130), composed of a CPU, a ROM and a RAM, controls the functions of the terminal connection parts(110) and the terminal connection control part(120). The local control bus interface part(140) makes the main control part(160) and the local control part(130) give and take control messages each other. The buffer(150) supplies the control clocks supplied from the main control part(160) to the terminal connection parts(110). The main control part(160) exchanges messages with the local control part(130) through the local control bus interface part(140) and supplies control clocks.
