A cathode ray tube includes a rectangular panel having a phosphor screen formed thereon, a neck having an electron gun assembly disposed therein for emitting three electron beams and a funnel. The funnel has a body portion and a cone portion wherein a contour of the cross-section of the cone portion is a non-circular shape and the perpendicular distance from the tube axis to the contour occurs in the substantially diagonal direction with an angle theta' with respect to the horizontal axis according to the following inequality theta-(4.3+(S/3.8))<theta'<theta+(4.3+(S/3.8)), where theta is the angle in degrees between the diagonal of the face panel and the horizontal axis; S is the distance in mm between the centers of the electron passing holes of the electron gun assembly.
