The internal combustion engine consists of a cylinder (1), in which a piston (3) is displaced between a top dead centre point and a bottom dead centre point. A link mechanism, between the piston rod (40) and an activator (24), is designed to enable the volumetric ratio of the engine to be varied. The activator consists of an adjusting element (25) linked by a pivot (25a) to one end of a lever (26), which in turn is mounted to rotate on a connecting rod (27), from the crankshaft (28). The other end of this lever is connected to the piston rod.
