The safety belt retractor comprises a pretensioner integrated with a pyrotechnic force generator (160), which includes a tube with a propellant charge cartridge, a cylinder extending from the tube and a piston movably mounted in the cylinder. The piston is connected to an arm (171) with the other end of the arm extending out of the cylinder and has a pulley (172) mounted on it. The pretensioner is positioned in the second chamber of the retractor comprising a clutch disk (210) which is connected to a seat belt reel by a clutch mechanism so that so that when the force generator is activated the reel is caused to reverse. An Independent claim is included for a pretensioner.
