An electron gun (10) sends electrons, preferably generated by a number of pointed field emission cathodes, to an input waveguide (11) where they are directly density-modulated by an input signal (Pe). The electrons are accelerated and then pass into a second, output, waveguide (12) at a higher potential than the first guide. Preferably at least one waveguide is a molded type and both guides function in their fundamental mode and have the same cut-off frequency.
