The lamp has an inflatable envelope (12) that encloses the light source (14) and its controls (18). The envelope is made of a translucent flexible material that is sealed round the light source and its controls. The envelope can be inflated with air or helium through a valve (24) that allows external inflation or release of air or helium. The envelope is attached to the top of the light source (48) and to the bottom of the electronic control unit (20). A grille extends from the side of the light source to prevent contact between the envelope and the light source and to improve the mechanical rigidity of the lamp assembly.
