Installation includes a mold having cooled lateral walls defining a cavity whose cross-section is elongated and which is penetrated by a molten metal inlet nozzle. The mold is surmounted by a rigid cover whose periphery is above and in contact with the upper edges of the walls, and whose refractory central part penetrates into the cavity. A seal is provided between the cover periphery and the mold walls. The central part of the cover (2) forms an arch (40) comprising at least one external layer (41) of refractory material resistant to high temperatures and thermal shocks, an internal layer (44) of heat insulating material, and at least one intermediate layer (42, 43) between the external and internal layers. The arch penetrates more than 50 mm into the mold cavity (12). The nozzle passes through an orifice in the central part of the cover. Lubricating oil (31) and/or inert gas (32) injectors are located above the upper edges of the mold walls (11). A fume extraction chamber is located above the cover (2) and surrounds the orifice in the central part of the cover. The walls of the fume extraction chamber enclose the nozzle and rest on the upper face of the cover. The different layers (41, 42, 43, 44) are maintained in place by tie pieces that cross the layers and co-operate with reinforcing elements buried in the lower layer (41) of the arch.
