The deflector for a motor vehicle roof has a transverse deflector (1) which is moved between a retracted (li) position within the vehicle bodywork and an extended position (if) outside the bodywork. The mountings for the deflector are adjustable to vary its final extended position as a function of the vehicle speed and degree of roof opening. The deflector can be mounted at its ends on pivoted arms.
