The accumulator consists of a continuous driven chain (4) made from a series of supporting links (8) configured into upper and lower U-shaped sections (5, 6) passing round pinions (16, 17), at least one of which is driven. The two sections (5, 6) of the chain also pass round supports (20, 21) to turn them through 180 degrees horizontally, and the accumulator includes a system for moving the supports relative to one another in opposite directions to vary the lengths of the upper and lower sections in accordance with accumulation requirements, as well as a computerised control system for the pinion drives (22, 23).
