SELF-DEPLOYING CATHETER ASSEMBLY

A self-deploying catheter assembly (10) comprises an anchoring device (32) mounted to a tube (14). A distal end (26) of the anchoring device (32) is he ld in a fixed position by a releasable suture (34) while a proximal end (28) is freely movable between a proximal position and a distal position defined by a stop (23) on the tube (14). During insertion into a body cavity, the anchor (32) automatically maintains a low-profile state with the ends spaced apart. Once fully inserted, the anchor (32) self converts into a high-profile state when the tube (14) is slightly withdrawn, bringing the ends (26, 28) closer together. The suture (34) is disengaged to release the distal end (26) of th e anchor (32) in order to facilitate a low-profile state for withdrawal of the assembly (10).
