Manufacturing process for the preparation of alpha , alpha , alpha ', alpha '-branched dicarboxylic acids by reacting an olefin or precursor thereof, with carbon monoxide in the presence of a strong acid catalyst, characterized in that the starting olefin is an oligomer containing from 6 to 25 carbon atoms, that the acid catalyst is composed by BF3/H3PO4 in a molar ratio BF3/H3PO4 being in the range of 0.5:1 to 5.0:1, that the weight ratio of the catalyst relative to the mono-olefin is in the range of from 2:1 to 20:1, that the reaction is carried out at a temperature in the range of from 30 to 130 DEG C, and at a carbon monoxide pressure in the range of from 20 to 200 bar, that the water/catalyst weight ratio during the reaction is in the range of from 1:5 to 1:50, alpha , alpha , alpha ', alpha '-branched dicarboxylic acids mixtures obtainable by said process, and derivatives of these branched dicarboxylic acid components.
