PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device of which the response speed, especially falling time is accelerated when pixels are made to be in a turned off state without leaving it to the elasticity of liquid crystal molecules and to provide a liquid crystal display device wherein a voltage margin is not narrowed and the contrast is not reduced even when the number of scanning electrodes especially in simple matrix driving is increased. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a pair of substrates so formed that one pixel is constituted of three or more electrodes C1, C2, S1 and S2, a liquid crystal interposed between the substrates and a means for applying voltage to the electrodes. The voltage is applied to each electrode to generate an electric field in a direction varying according to the voltage in the pixel and the liquid crystal molecule 1a is rotated by the electric field in a plane parallel to the surface of the substrates and its direction is changed. |
