PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which a color image can be reflected as a monochromatic image even when a monochromatic image pickup element reads the color image. SOLUTION: A RAM 30 stores a color number, a color and a color table storing maximum levels corresponding to the colors. When a color number in response to a color image is entered by a ten-key pad 64, a conversion value corresponding to the color is calculated. A conversion value corresponding to '256' being the highest level of a black pixel is calculated from pixel data outputted from a read section 40 based on pixel data outputted from the read section 40 and the conversion value. Then, binary processing is executed based on the conversion value and a prescribed threshold. Thus, even when a monochromatic image pickup element reads a color image, the image reader reflects the color image as a monochromatic image.
