PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect the abnormality of thickness of a long slender material such as rush and ditch reed, and simultaneous conveyance of plural long slender materials so as to stop or remove the long slender material conveyed at the time, and so as to previously prevent the plural long slender materials from being inserted at once. SOLUTION: The rush 1 is conveyed at the same speed at every time, and a signal having the number of clocks corresponding to the time of interrupting the light when the rush 1 passes the optical axis 61c between a light-casting element 61a and a light-receiving element 61b in the midway of the conveyance, or the optical axis 62c between a light-casting element 62a and a light-receiving element 62b is outputted to allow the width of the rush 1 in the conveying direction (radial direction) to be measured. As a result, it can be determined without receiving the influence of the largeness of the quantity of the light, dust or the like in the work environment that the thickness of the rush 1 is in the specification or not, or in a doubled state or not.
