PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation of the quality of a display picture owing to impurity ions while maintaining a sufficient bit-plane time in a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: In the method for driving a liquid crystal display element, an internal DC voltage is suppressed from being generated by using a driving voltage waveform consisting of a display signal period and a control signal period which is not related to display in a fixed time or in plural frame periods or in one frame period and by applying an AC voltage such as rectangular wave to the liquid crystal display element in a control signal period.
