PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame detector and a method for setting its detection sensitivity in which an invalid detection area is reduced thereby enlarging a substantial valid detection area while a flame judgment accuracy is improved, and moreover a position of a flame generated at the detection area can be roughly grasped. SOLUTION: This flame detector is constituted including a sensor part SEN with a light receiving element 10, a filter part FLT for passing only a predetermined signal component Ap from a detection signal Sp of the sensor part SEN, an amplifying part AMP for amplifying the signal component Ap by a variably set and predetermined amplification factor, and a signal-processing part PRO which has an A/D converter 50 for converting an amplified output signal Bp of the amplifying part AMP to a digital signal, a saturation-detecting part 61 for detecting a saturation state of the A/D converted amplified output signal Bp, a sensitivity-switching control part 61 for switching and setting to an optimum detection sensitivity, and a flame-judging part 63 which carries out a flame judgment process on the basis of the amplified output signal Bp at the optimum detection sensitivity.
