PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an eyepiece optical system which is shorter in overall length than heretofore, is high in grade and is capable of making virtual image display. SOLUTION: The system which macrodisplays the virtual images of the videos displayed on a two-dimensional display element 4 to an observer's eye 1 has, successively from the observer's eye 1, an aspheric resin lens 2 consisting of a first surface which is an aspheric surface and a second surface which is approximately plane, a spherical glass lens 3 of which the first surface is a concave surface and a polarized light converting element 5 which is arranged between the spherical glass lens 3 and the two-dimensional display element 4 and converts the video light L from the two-dimensional display element 4 to circularly polarized light. A circularly polarized light reflection and transmission surface 6 which allows the selective reflection and transmission of the video light L from the two-dimensional display element 4 by the rotating direction of the circularly polarized light is formed on the second surface of the aspheric resin lens 2 and a translucent mirror finished surface 7 is formed on the first surface of the spherical glass lens 3. |
