PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle detecting method and system by which individual vehicles can surely be separated and detected. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a picture input part 1 for inputting pictures photographed by one or plural television cameras, etc., which photographs a road picture, a picture storing part 2 for storing the inputted pictures, a movement vector calculation part 3 for calculating a movement vector from the pictures stored in the part 2, a movement vector calculation part 4 for setting an area for calculating the movement vector on a screen, a movement vector distribution storing part 5 for storing the distribution of the movement vector calculated by the part 4, and an inter-vehicle pause detecting part 6 for detecting a pause between vehicles from the distribution of the movement vector stored in the part 5. |
