PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup device that controls sweep-out transfer depending on an unnecessary charge amount requiring the sweep-out transfer and conducts exposure control without using an electronic shutter pulse at still picture photographing so as to reduce a photographing interval. SOLUTION: An unnecessary charge amount caused in a vertical transfer section at still picture photographing is calculated by using smear and a dark current at monitoring drive. Then an optimum sweep-out transfer pulse stage number and a sweep-out transfer pulse frequency or the like are set depending on the calculated unnecessary charge amount to control a sweep-out transfer pulse FVX. Furthermore, the unnecessary charge amount swept out for a prescribed period is changed by the sweep-out transfer pulse stage number and the sweep-out transfer pulse frequency to reduce a sweep-out transfer period. Moreover, using a charge read pulse VTGX and a mechanical shutter controls an image pickup charge storage period so as to reduce the interval of still picture photographing by one vertical reference signal period in comparison with that of a conventional solid-state image pickup device.
