PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply a magnetoresistive element to the reproduction of a magnetic tape and the like. SOLUTION: The magnetoresistive element is provided with a ferromagnetic body MR for detection having an anisotropic magnetic resistance effect and a magnetization direction varied by an external magnetic field and a ferromagnetic body B for bias opposite to the ferromagnetic body MR for detection via a non-magnetic body C. The magnetoresistive element is further provided with an anti-ferromagnetic body A at the surface opposite to the ferromagnetic body MR for detection of the ferromagnetic body B for bias. A magnetization direction of the ferromagnetic body B for bias is aligned in a specified direction nearly parallel to the direction of the external magnetic field Z by the anti-ferromagnetic body A. That is, the magnetization direction of the ferromagnetic body B for bias is determined by an intense interlayer coupling field He due to unidirectional anisotropy in the interface between the ferromagnetic body B for bias and the anti-ferromagnetic body A adjacently layered. As a result, the magnetization direction of the ferromagnetic body B for bias is extremely intensely fixed and is not fluctuated by the influence of external magnetic field and the like.
