PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mixed flow pump having the high specific speed, capable of realizing desired flow rate/head characteristics as well as the reduction of cost. SOLUTION: This mixed flow pump of the high specific speed is provided with an inner casing for surrounding the periphery of a main shaft; an outer casing arranged approximately concentrically with the inner casing; an impeller connected to the main shaft, extending toward the outer casing and diagonally in relation to the axial direction of the main shaft, and rotatable around the axial direction; and a swirl generating means for generating a swirl on fluid in the upstream of the impeller and in the same direction as the rotational direction of the impeller. It is further provided with a swirl control means for controlling the swirl according to the flow rate of fluid flowing between the inner casing and the outer casing.
