PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost surface illumination device and a liquid crystal display using it, which have a simple structure and can be easily assembled while having higher illumination efficiency and can be suitably used for a portable liquid crystal display or the like, by utilizing a point light source such as a white LED although it has been difficult to be applied to the surface illumination device because it is a point light source despite its advantage a light source. SOLUTION: In the surface illumination device which is composed of a point light source that is arranged on a side end part of almost a transparent light guide 11 with a light emitting surface on its one face and in which a light drawing out mechanism 14 is installed at the light guide, the point light source 12 is arranged on at least one corner part 13 of the light guide 11, and a corner cut surface 13a is formed on the corner 13 so that a light incident surface is directed almost a central direction of the light emitting surface. |
