PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can realize a low noise occupancy rate and a high gradation even when an image read speed is increased. SOLUTION: An image scanner 100 is provided with a color image reading lamp 102, a black/white image reading lamp 101 whose luminous quantity is more than that of the lamp 102, and a CCD 207, and when an image read mode is not a color image read mode, that is, when the image react mode is a black/ white image read mode (NO in a step 202), an inverter control section i05 drives an inverter 103 to light the lamp 101 (step 204).
