PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent such defect that a range switching valve stops in an R range in the process to switch the current speed range to a P range in switching a range to another range electronically. SOLUTION: While the speed is kept in the P range, the range switching valve 9 is positioned at the neutral position (NP position) shown in the figure, and both of a reverse clutch R/C and a forward clutch F/C are released for making an automatic transmission neutral. While the speed is in the R range, the valve 9 is shifted from the position shown in the figure to the left and to a backward travel position (R position), and the clutch R/C is engaged by line pressure PL, and the clutch F/C is released so that the automatic transmission can travel backward. While the speed is in an N range, the valve 9 is positioned at the neutral position for making the automatic transmission neutral. While the speed is in a D range, the valve 9 is shifted from the position shown in the figure to the right and to a forward travel position (D position), and the clutch R/C is engaged by line pressure PL, and the clutch F/C is released so that the automatic transmission can travel forward. The valve 9 thus does not pass through the R position when the D range is switched to the P range and when the N range is switched to the P range, as a result, the defect caused by R range achievement due to the stop of the valve 9 at the R position can be prevented.
