PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately position elements to prevent changes in the length of the elements upon formation of a wire lead for a ceramic metal halide lamp. SOLUTION: At least 2 wire elements, preferably, 3 elements of tungsten, niobium and molybdenum are welded together to form leads (14, 16). The first and second wire element are supported on first and second wire supports (112, 114) in alignment in an axial direction along a coaxial line to form a welded joint (X). The movable wire support (112) is moved in the direction of the coaxial line until the opposed ends of the first and second wire elements come into contact with each other, thereby forming a welded seam while retaining engaging force between these ends to join the first and second wire elements. After this first seam is inspected, a second seam is formed to form a wire lead composed of the 3 elements.
