PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surveying instrument on which a magnetic encoder capable of removing the influence of an external magnetic field is mounted. SOLUTION: In a total station 11, the magnetic encoder 51 is mounted. External-magnetic-field sensing elements 131 (131a, 131b) which sense the external magnetic field acting on a magnetic sensor unit 54 in the magnetic encoder 51 and a magnetic-field generation member 231 which generates a magnetic field in a direction which offsets the external magnetic field acting on the unit 54 are installed inside the total station 11. The magnetic field which offsets the external magnetic field acting on the unit 54 sensed by the sensing elements 131 (131a, 131b) is generated in the member 231.
