PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a light receiving unit made of a semiconduc tor material such that the light receiving unit must be able to operate over a long distance under various environmental conditions when it is used for remote control, which means that the light receiving unit must have high sensitiv ity and must react to an electromagnetic field, and that a conventional light receiving unit is contained in a containing member which incorporates a separate metallic wrapping member for protecting the light receiving unit against electro magnetic radiation. SOLUTION: The light receiving unit has a surface coated with polysilicon. A cathode contact at the uppermost part is recessed. Furthermore, a thick oxide layer is formed between a substrate and a layer coated with polysilicon. Such a light receiving unit insusceptible to electromagnetic radiation is principally demanded for remote control.
