PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having a high quality black display and realizing a reflective mode display. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a reflection region which displays using light, incident from the side of a substrate arranged on the observer's side, passing through a polarizing element, an optical retardation element and a liquid crystal layer in this order and reflected by a reflection layer. Retardation Δn.d of the liquid crystal layer varies in a range Δn1.d<=Δn.d<=Δn2.d according to an applied voltage value and the black display is carried out in the case of Δn.d=Δn1.d. Δn1.d satisfies an inequality Δn1.d<=λ/4 with respect to all wavelengths λ of light in the visible region (400-700 nm) and retardation of the optical retardation element is provided with a relation of monotonical increase with increase of λ. |
