PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader which can finely adjust the load to be exerted to a drive means. SOLUTION: This original reader has a first carriage 5 which has a light source lamp 13 for irradiating original surface and is movable is a direction along original surface, first to third mirrors 15, 17 and 19 which introduce the reflected light from original to a CCD 9, the CCD 9 which photoelectrically transduces reflected light guided to the first to third mirros and reads the same and a drive assembly 11 which drives the first carriage 5. The first carriage 5 is moved by the rotational driving of a supporting shaft 25 of the drive assembly 11. The supporting shaft 25 of the drive assembly 11 is provided with rod members 29 for imparting inertia mass to the supporting shaft 25 and the radii of rotation of the rod members 29 are made variable.
