N-METHYL-2-PYRROLIDONE COMPOSITION AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone composition having good hue. SOLUTION: An N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone composition is produced by reacting a mixture of ammonia, monomethylamine, dimethylamine and trimethylamine having an absorbance of <=1.0 at 270 nm and/or <=0.5 at 280 nm measured by using a 10 mm cell with aγ-butyrolactone mixture under at least one of the following conditions: (a) the distillation purification process is carried out by setting the contents of each metal component in the distillation column 3 and the packing material of the column within specific ranges, (b) theγ- butyrolactone mixture used as a raw material does not contain impurities having a UV absorption higher than the UV spectrum absorption of pureγ- butyrolactone and (c) the number of compounds other thanγ-butyrolactone and having a concentration of >=10 ppm is restricted below a specific level.
