PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain both an aromatic hydrocarbon resin capable of shortening the time required for modifying an asphalt as compared with that of a conventional aromatic hydrocarbon resin with slight malodor during the modification and a modified asphalt composition comprising the aromatic hydrocarbon resin. SOLUTION: This aromatic hydrocarbon resin for the modified asphalt is an aromatic hydrocarbon resin having 135-190 deg.C softening point, 1,200-2,500 weight-average molecular weight and >=90 deg.C softening point of a composition prepared by compounding 6 pts.wt. of the aromatic hydrocarbon resin with 100 pts.wt. of straight asphalt having 65 penetration at 25 deg.C and 8 pts.wt. of a styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer containing 30 wt.% of polystyrene unit and having 110,000 weight-average molecular weight after the passage of 7 h from the start of thermal melting and mixing at 190 deg.C.
